1.1 OVERVIEW: Prepare to create your future

Introduction:

Are you driven by a powerful life vision? Do you have a vision but you get distracted? Perhaps you are on a clear path, and through this course you will discover a new or refined purpose.

Learning Objective:

In this first formal week in the EPV course you will practice creating a compelling End Point Vision (EPV) using four key structures:

  1. A multi-sensory movie of your vision,
  2. Critical Events that happen just before the vision is fulfilled,
  3. A bigger vision Beyond Your EPV, and
  4. The all-important Integrity Week schedule.

Pre-assessment:

First let’s look at what you already know.

What experience do you have with visualization? How do you think…in pictures, inner words, verbalizing out loud, imagine 3D movies, sounds…something else? Are there any methods you avoid, or have had a bad experience with? Use your natural style for this activity, while being open to new ways of thinking and imagining. Curiosity, experimentation and play are good ways to learn.

Learning Activities:

1) Get the following materials so you can sketch out the details of your EPV:

  • A notebook or blank sheets of paper
  • A pen, pencil or coloured pens/pencils
  • Print an EPV First Step worksheet (see Resources below), or sketch out similar form on a blank sheet of paper.

2) You can do this alone, with your coach/parent or friend who is also working on the EPV program.

  • If alone, choose a life area for which you want to create a vision
  • If working on a vision you share with someone else, agree on the life area or general nature of the vision you share.
  • If working with your coach, have him/her guide you through the process…reading the instructions while you document your EPV. See the EPV coaching guidelines lesson from Week 0 - Orientation. [ link to Coaching Guidelines lesson ]

3) Set up a quiet space so you can focus on the details of your emerging vision:

  • Turn off the phone(s), computer and anything that dings.
  • Tell people around you that you are to be left alone for about 30 minutes
  • Put a sign on the door that says “Quiet Please.”

Post-assessment:

Think about what you need to do to get ready to create a compelling End Point Vision. Do you have everything you need? Do you have any questions?...concerns? It’s OK to be uncertain…this may be new to you, but do your best to release anxiety. We will guide you through the process.

Summary:

Hopefully you are feeling stoked and ready to get into creating your first End Point Vision, which you will do in the next lesson.

Application: Creating a quiet space for new ideas

When do you get your best ideas? When do solutions pop into your mind? Ideas may bubble up when you least expect them…It may be when you are in the shower mindlessly scrubbing away, in the fuzzy space between sleep and waking, or while or after taking a stroll.

If this idea is unfamiliar to you, then this activity will help you find your own way. Perform this experiment to increase your access to the deep knowledge in the unconscious part of your mind.

It is simple: Create a quiet space, get clear on what you want to know a problem you want to solve, frame a clear question, and then to listen for the answer. Notice how and when an answer comes. Accept the first thing that comes up. It may be words, pictures, and object, animal or someone you meet.

Play with this idea; be playfully curious and notice the answer you receive. The answer may come quickly, or over a couple of days … during a shower, after a nap, during an aimless stroll or relaxed jog (preferably in nature).
